Best Time To Visit Botswana
Best Time for Botswana safaris and holidays
Botswana is a year round safari destination, offering exceptional game viewing in every season. However, the best time to visit Botswana is during the dry winter months from May to October, when wildlife gathers around permanent water sources, especially in the Okavango Delta, Chobe, and Moremi. This period offers crisp mornings, warm days, and incredible opportunities to witness large herds and predator action in open, accessible landscapes.
If you prefer lush green scenery and fewer crowds, the green season from November to March is equally rewarding. This is when Botswana transforms into a verdant haven, perfect for photographers and bird watchers. It’s also the calving season in the Kalahari, attracting predators and offering raw, dramatic wildlife moments.
Thanks to its location in the tropical and semi-arid zones, Botswana enjoys a generally warm and dry climate. Rainfall is mostly concentrated between December and March, and while brief afternoon showers are common, they rarely disrupt safari activities, especially in private concessions where off-road game drives are permitted year round.
That said, some remote camps and lodges in flood prone areas may become inaccessible during peak rainy periods, particularly between January and early March. If you’re planning a mobile or self-drive safari, it’s wise to avoid this window due to muddy tracks and occasional flooding.
Whether you’re drawn to Botswana’s dramatic dry season game concentrations or the emerald beauty of the green season, there’s always something magical waiting to be experienced.

Jan to March
January to March in Botswana is calving season, especially in the Central Kalahari, drawing predators and offering dramatic wildlife action. The landscape is lush, birdlife is abundant, and while it’s hot with occasional rain, it’s a rewarding time for adventurous safari-goers.

April To June
April to June in Botswana marks the start of the dry season, with cooler temperatures, clear skies, and increasingly good game viewing. Wildlife begins to concentrate around water sources, especially in the Okavango Delta, making it a great time for both land and water-based safaris.

July To December
July to December is Botswana’s peak safari season, offering the best game viewing as wildlife gathers around shrinking water sources. The weather is dry and cool from July to October, ideal for safaris in the Okavango Delta, Chobe, and Moremi.

Wildlife Destinations in Botswana
Botswana is home to some of Africa’s most iconic and unspoiled wilderness areas, including the world-renowned Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as Chobe National Park, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Moremi Game Reserve, and the striking Makgadikgadi Pans. The country’s primary entry points, Maun Airport and Kasane Airport, are well connected and serve as hubs to Botswana’s top safari destinations.
Daily scheduled and charter flights link Maun to remote camps and lodges, while well maintained road networks support comfortable overland journeys. Cheetah Safaris proudly offers expertly guided safaris in custom 4×4 vehicles, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience through Botswana’s wild terrain.
Each national park and private concession in Botswana offers its own unique charm, wildlife, and accommodation options, from luxurious lodges in the Delta to authentic bush camps in the Kalahari. Witness massive elephant herds in Chobe, glide through the Delta’s channels by mokoro, or explore the desert-adapted wildlife of Nxai Pan and the Kalahari.
